Freelancing: Making Sure You Get Paid!

PUBLISHED 03/02/2018

If you have recently taken the decision to go it alone as a freelancer, congratulations! You are about to enjoy the UK’s most fulfilled independent workforce that is growing bigger by the day.

Signature Works in Liverpool is a dedicated flexible office space provider located and we provide a wealth of support for freelancers to boost their success. Taking the plunge to become a freelancer doesn’t mean that you have to be on your own. There are close to 2 million self-employed people in Britain and that number is rising and so you’re actually part of a rapidly growing trend.

We endeavour to support our members as much as possible and providing useful information is just one of the ways we can help.

How to Invoice

Before you are able to receive any payment, you have to consider how you will be doing your invoicing. You’ll want to give your invoices sequential numbers so that you have an accurate record of when you’ve been paid and this will be useful for your bookkeeping. It’s worth spending a bit of money on accounting software to help you create professional looking invoices and it should contain all the necessary information such as when payment is due and what happens if payment is late. If you want a little help in this area, you can check these out as a resource:

FreshBooks: Sick of hearing the excuse “I never got your invoice?” With FreshBooks, you’ll be able to tell who’s fibbing and who’s telling the truth with the program’s invoice viewing history. If you’re working internationally, FreshBooks has the ability to bill in foreign currencies.

PayPal: If you’re already using PayPal to receive payments, you may not need to sign up for a separate invoicing service. PayPal allows you to send and organise invoices linked to your free, pre-existing account.

Wave: Wave offers a full suite of billing services for your freelance business. You can send and organise invoices, receive payments, ping payment reminders, and track finances.

What to Do If You’re Not Getting Paid

Not getting paid at all is a significant issue for freelancers and one of the only areas that can get stressful. This is a rising problem in the UK, where many businesses are finding the economy hard but of course, freelancers are at the sharp end in this respect. If you have not been paid according to your schedule, you need to have a procedure in place to make sure you do.

It’s always important to keep calm if you’re chasing a client for money, especially if you would like to continue working for them. Nevertheless, you have to be assertive to a degree if you want to get paid sooner rather than later, so don’t let your client drag out payment to suit them because it will cause you financial difficulties in the interim.
